How do I make my Joomla site faster?
Turn on caching and Gzip in Global Configuration, use WebP images, and remove extensions you don't use. Good hosting matters most.
What makes a site slow
Most of the time it is the server (slow hosting, old PHP), heavy pages (big images, many scripts) or extensions that run a lot of database queries. Joomla itself is fast; caching makes it faster.
Quick wins
- Use current PHP (8.3/8.4) and good hosting with enough memory.
- Turn on caching: Global Configuration → System → System Cache: ON - Conservative caching.
- Turn on Gzip Page Compression (Global Configuration → Server), unless your server already compresses pages.
- Resize images before uploading and use modern formats (WebP); keep hero images under ~300 KB.
- Remove extensions you don't use, especially system plugins that run on every page.
Measure
- Test with PageSpeed Insights or Pingdom before and after each change, so you know what helped.
- Turn on Debug System briefly on a copy: it shows how long each part of the page takes and how many queries run.
Good to know
- For mostly static sites, the System - Page Cache plugin gives the biggest speed gain; avoid it on shops and member areas.
- A CDN helps most when visitors come from far away.
