Will my Joomla 3 template still work?
No. Joomla 3 templates don't run on Joomla 4 and later. Pick a new template, or have yours rebuilt for the current version.
Why not
Joomla 4 changed how templates are built: new layouts, Bootstrap 5, a new asset system and new module positions. Joomla 3 templates (including the old Protostar and Beez3) are not compatible and disappear from the site during the upgrade.
Your options
- Use Cassiopeia, the Joomla core template, and change its colours, fonts and logo.
- Buy a new template that is built for Joomla 6.
- Ask your template provider whether a Joomla 4+ version exists and whether there is an upgrade path.
- Have your design rebuilt for the current Joomla version.
Before you migrate
- Switch the site to Protostar as default on your test copy, so the upgrade doesn't trip over a broken template.
- Note your template's module positions: you will need to place modules again in the new template.
