Password reset emails never arrive

FixJoomlaUsers, login & permissions Updated 17 Oct 2026

Your site can't send email. Set up SMTP in Global Configuration → Server → Mail and send a test mail.

Why it happens

The reset itself works; the email doesn't get delivered. Your site sends mail through the web server by default, which many hosts limit and mail providers often filter as spam.

Fix it

  1. Check the spam folder first.
  2. Set up SMTP: System → Global Configuration → Server → Mail, Mailer SMTP, with your mail provider's host, port, security and login.
  3. Use a From Email on your own domain.
  4. Click Send Test Mail. If the test arrives, reset emails will too.

Good to know

  • An administrator can also set a new password for a user in Users → Manage and set Require Password Reset to Yes, so the user picks their own at the next login.
