Can I undo an update?

JoomlaUpdating & upgrading Updated 17 Oct 2026

Not with a button. Restore the backup you made before updating; that is why you always back up first.

Why there is no undo button

An update replaces core files and changes the database. Joomla can't reverse those changes, and installing an older package over a newer one would leave the database in the wrong state. The official guides call a major upgrade "irreversible in practice".

How to go back

  1. Restore the backup you made before the update (Akeeba Backup + Kickstart, or your host's restore).
  2. Restore into an empty folder and database, or remove the broken site first.
  3. Check the restored site, then fix the cause (usually an extension) on a test copy before you try again.

Good to know

  • That is why every update guide starts with "make a backup and test that it restores".
  • Small problems after a patch update are usually fixed faster by the next patch or by disabling one extension than by rolling back.
