Can Joomla update itself automatically?
Yes, from Joomla 5.4: System → Update → Joomla → Options → Automated Updates. New sites have it on; sites updated from older versions turn it on there. It updates Joomla itself, not extensions.
How automated updates work
From Joomla 5.4, the Joomla project can install core updates on your site for you. When a new release is out, Joomla's update service contacts your site, checks it is healthy, and runs the update. You get an email about it.
Turn it on or off
- Go to System → Update → Joomla and click Options.
- Open the Automated Updates tab and set it to Yes (or No).
- Keep Update Channel on Default and Minimum Stability on Stable.
What to know
- New Joomla 5.4 / 6 sites have it on; sites updated from older versions have it off until you turn it on.
- Your site must be reachable from the internet.
- It updates Joomla itself only. Extensions, templates and major versions (like 5 → 6) are still up to you.
Good to know
- Keep backups running on a schedule anyway (Akeeba Backup can run them automatically).
