Where can I put modules on the page?

JoomlaContent, menus & templates Updated 17 Oct 2026

Each template has named positions. Turn on Preview Module Positions in Templates → Options, then add ?tp=1 to any page address to see them.

Module positions

Each template has named places for modules: positions such as menu, sidebar-right, footer. A module only shows when it is assigned to a position that exists in the active template, and on the pages chosen in its Menu Assignment.

See the positions on your site

  1. Go to System → Site Templates and click Options.
  2. Set Preview Module Positions to Enabled and save.
  3. Open any page of your site and add ?tp=1 to the address (or &tp=1 if it already has a ?). Every position is outlined with its name.
  4. Turn the preview off again on a live site.

Put a module in a position

  1. Open the module in Content → Site Modules.
  2. Pick the Position from the list.
  3. In Menu Assignment, choose the pages it should appear on.
