"The tmp folder is not writable"

FixJoomlaErrors & troubleshooting Updated 17 Oct 2026

Set Path to Temp Folder in Global Configuration → Server to your site's tmp folder, and make sure it is writable (755).

Why it happens

Joomla uses its temp folder for uploads, extension installs and updates. If the path in Global Configuration is wrong (often after a move) or the folder isn't writable, installs and updates fail.

Fix it

  1. Go to System → Global Configuration → Server and set Path to Temp Folder to your site's folder plus /tmp.
  2. Make sure the tmp folder exists and is writable (755).
  3. Save, then try the install or update again.

Good to know

  • If your host uses open_basedir, the temp folder must be inside the allowed paths; your site's own tmp folder always is.
