What does the Pre-Update Check tell me?
Whether your PHP settings and each installed extension are ready for the next version. Green means ready; fix or replace anything that isn't.
What it checks
Before a minor or major update, Joomla compares your server and your extensions with what the new version needs. It runs only for minor and major updates, not for small patch releases.
The three parts
- Required Settings: PHP version, database and PHP extensions. These must pass, or the update isn't offered.
- Recommended Settings: PHP options such as output buffering. Warnings here are often server-specific and usually don't block the update.
- Extensions: your third-party extensions, grouped by whether the developer reports them as compatible, has no information, or needs no update.
How to read the extensions part
- It depends on developers publishing correct compatibility data, so it is a rough guide, not a guarantee.
- Extensions with an update available: update them in System → Update → Extensions.
- No information: test the extension on a copy of your site or ask its developer.
- Treat System → Manage → Extensions, the developer's site and your own test as the real answer.
